My name..

'hey ami' 'amitz' 'amit' 'am' 'anitha' 'amritha' 'amidhe'.. I don't think I will be successful to list out all the names with which I am addressed other than 'amita'. However I never spent much time to correct if it is any different from 'amita' – but the fact remains that I always feel my name is an intrinsic part of me.

My mother was always called with her cute name and many of my family members do not know her actual name (the one which is mentioned in her official records). Probably this is one of the reasons, my parents hurried to name me even before any other name of mine became popular. 'Amita' – I always liked and few of the reasons are –

  • It just has five letters
  • Alphabetically it comes the first slot - experiences of being in the first slot could be any extremes – so I like it for such experiences
  • Not very common in my place (south India)

By the way, my name means 'Unlimited'. Who ever knew the meaning of the name often asked – what is that you have without any limits..?? The answer for which was always a blush and a sheepish smile.

Apart from giving identity to the person, name shapes personality and affects personal growth. I believed the same and had it at the back of my mind whenever I have a chance or choice to call a person by a name. Calling them by the name given by the parents has always been my choice

Though the corporate world has come out of the culture to address the person by the id/numbers etc – treating the name very mechanically is very common. Emails being the most common way of communication amongst the employees of multinational companies 'Dear XYZ', 'Hi XYZ' are used just for the heck of it.

Some mails do not have such formalities – and I really respect their honesty.

Some mails really give the feel that they had the words 'Dear Amita' in their mind when they wrote.

The whole purpose of this blog is about this category – mails which address very vaguely.

In the midst of such experiences (which are all the more common with a new joinee) I can never forget this experience.

I wrote a mail to one of the heads asking for his time to join a meeting which is often not very interesting to many such heads. Just after they read through that mail, they would hardly be bothered to check their calendar if there is any available slot for the proposed time or if there is any other slot which he/she can propose.

I get a reply from this person –

Amit,

[[[with full of explanation and details]]]]

Let me know if you need further input/clarity.

Thanks,

(his name)

I did not notice that my name is wrongly spelt (as I almost gave up seeing the way I am addressed) and read through the inputs he gave. Another mail comes from the same person after 22 mins –

"I am sorry for not fully spelling your name, Amita."

Ghosh!! I was speechless for quite some time as it is very unlike of such people. The fact that he replied after about 20 minutes also intrigued me a lot.

My reply – "Dear ….. My first reaction once I saw this mail is astonishment!! (This is the first time I ever saw someone giving so much importance to the name – I will definitely remember this experience for my life). ………"

His reply – "I believe - Mistake is a mistake and more so when it is related to one's own identity - it is important for us to respect and acknowledge.

Take care,….."

Amazing..

Mind it.. :P

Seldom do I go for movies. On Saturday (29th August 09) went to Satyam (in chennai) to watch the movie Transformers. I had won a Satyam movie ticket voucher in the office for Fundoo Friday balloon blowing game, and this motivated me to go and watch a movie. Transformers was a great disappointment for me. I could not enjoy that movie for two main reasons – one is the AC fan being just on my head – kept shivering all through the movie and waited when it would end; the other being I don't like movies with animation. To compensate with this disappointment, checked if I could get tickets for Quick Gun Murugan(the chances of getting a ticket for this movie on Saturday in the last minute are very thin). I got the reply (as expected) from the person in the counter that there are no tickets. Somehow I was still near the counter and I am told that the tickets for QGM are available. Out of my excitement to buy them even before someone else could, I forgot to use the voucher which was the whole and soul reason for me to go to the theatre (yes you got it right – I did not use the voucher for Transformers as I booked the tickets online – and we can't use the voucher if we book online – I thought of using the voucher for some other ticket).

Once I got my tickets, I realized that I dint use my voucher and enquired if I could use that voucher to get my money back on the tickets which were bought few seconds earlier. I learnt that there is another counter to buy tickets through such vouchers. Knowing that I could not use the voucher unless I buy another ticket in the mentioned counter, I left the ticket counter and searched for a place where I could find something to eat. There is a place called 'noodle house' near the theatre, it looked expensive, felt I could not afford it after two weekend movie tickets (120+120). Kept strolling around the theatre and finally bought a water bottle and walked back to the theatre. There is a veg (pure veg) restaurant – idli & dosa, a pretty decent place to have tiffins - in the theatre. The bill is around Rs.130 + Rs20 tip for three items – appam and coconut milk; pesarattu upma; plain dosa. Quick service – could be because it is not so crowded. I must appreciate this place – it is worth every rupee you spend there.

Quick Gun Murugan was something which I longed to watch from the moment I saw RajendraPrasad's (actually Dr.Rajendra Prasad's) trailers in the TV. Dr.Rajendra Prasad's recent movies like me sreyobhilashi and aa naluguru are worth watching. He is king of comedy in many of the movies and won many accolades for his contributions to the industry. QGM is 1 hour 45 minutes movie and has very funny (actually crazy) scenes of the bullets going in unexpected directions before it hits the victim.

This is the first time I watched a spoof film and I enjoyed the scenes related to Rowdy MBA (yamBA). The Rowdy MBA is supposed to be a consultant for a business man Rice Plate Reddy who wants to launch a World class A1 dosa (Mc Dosa).

All I felt at the end of day, when I am walking out of the theatre, was the voucher which I won had dragged me to watch a movie (actually movies), which I wouldn't have watched otherwise – with taking a message that I should come back to the theatre again (before the expiry date which is after 6 months) if I want to make use of the voucher. In this busy life, if a person does not plan much and just goes to make use of such vouchers, they actually get into the marketing traps and end up spending more than what is planned.
